The Affairs of 7de laan through the years – Updated

Whenever there’s a hint of an affair on 7de Laan, viewers go into meltdown and long for the good old wholesome days of 7de Laan. Well, there was never such a thing. There’s always been that soapie staple of cheating and deception. Nostalgia makes some people only remember the days of Bart and Clara and all the silly fashion shows and not how freely the people of Hillside dabbled in debauchery. In 2020, affairs of the heart are far more conservative than back in the day.

The tiniest hint of an affair between Lesedi Moloi and Dr Fikani Chauke had viewers up in arms and writers backtracking almost as fast as me when I remember to put my mask on halfway out the gate. Of course in the time of the coronavirus, it’s pointless writing affairs when lovers can’t touch each other. Except that it worked out for 7de Laan’s first gay love affair with a main character involved. Yet Shawn and Llewellyn’s love affair was still very touching and the hurt and longing felt real.

Here are a few 7de Laan affairs that I can recall/find…

When 7de laan started the drama in April 2000, the story focused on the love triangle between Jan Hendrik, Petra and Tiaan.  Petra was torn between the two brothers, got pregnant by Tiaan, and married Jan-Hendrik! Until the day she died she was torn between the two.

Sandra Stutterheim was the love child of Madel Terblanche’s husband who had an affair with Sandra’s mother.  All Sandra’s rage and desire for revenge stemmed from this affair. And Madel hated Sandra for something she had no control over.

Felicity doggedly pursued and got pregnant by Vanessa’s boyfriend, Aubrey. Felicity lived with Charmaine and Vanessa and was like a sister to Vanessa. Who knows how this story would’ve ended had the actor who played Aubrey not passed on.

George developed feelings for his bestie, Wilmien, and got engaged to his then-girlfriend, Karien to hide his feelings. He got jealous when Wilmien pitched up with Marko at an event and punched Marko. Karien, meanwhile, asked George many times if he was sure he wanted to get married. He told her yes. In the end, George and Wilmien left Hillside, bought a boat, and set sail somewhere in Europe.

Vanessa in turn fully well knew Felicity was in love with and in a relationship with Xander when she got involved with him.  Felicity was overseas at the time  Xander cheated on her. But Felicity was dating Vince when Xander started pursuing her. Vince, meanwhile, two-timed Felicity and she eventually caught him kissing a girl called Tersia. Fecility was our very own Brooke Logan, having dated Xander, Vince, and their dad, Neville Meintjies. I think it was only serious between her and Xander though.

A married Xander had a huge crush on his sister-in-law, Bonita. This madness caused his marriage to Vanessa to temporarily break up. Bonita of course cheated on Vince at the same time. Bonita and Xander had baby Daniel, which was the last straw for Vanessa who divorced Xander. Xander fathered Gabriel with Bonita through artificial means and died just as he and Vanessa found their way back to each other.

Herman cheated on Felicity with Gita, but she eventually forgave him after he begged for forgiveness, and she proposed to him. Felicity cheated on Herman with Willem. Fortunately, for him, Herman never found out as he was killed in a car accident before Louis could tell him.

Emma broke Herman’s heart when she fell for Dawid Greeff.

Vince cheated with Celeste (his son, Christopher’s mother), a married woman.  She was married to an old man for his money. But married is married.

Sweet Dezi had emotional affairs with her ex-boyfriend from way back when, Theuns, and husband Jan-Hendrik’s best friend Douw. Madel caught Douw and Dezi kissing! Ironically Felicity was disgusted when Dezi told her about her feelings for Douw. Dezi eventually left Jan-Hendrik because of her great love for Theuns – her deceased ex.

Isabelle cheated on Ryno with her sister’s ex Dawid Greef. Ryno eventually forgave her.

Kim cheated on Diederik with Willem and broke his heart.

Clara cheated on Diederik with Marko. Poor Diederik was cheated on consistently over the years.

Tim cheated on Bernard’s mother Linda with Gita and baby Ava was born.  Tim eventually divorced Linda to be with Gita.

Bernard cheated on Annelie with Gita.

Sonja cheated with Bertus, the love of her best friend Nadia’s life at the time and got pregnant with his child.

Altus cheated on Paula with Kristin. And Paula broke Altus’ heart countless times by falling for other men before they were married. Never mind that she was still married to someone else when she started a relationship with Altie again.

Oom Oubaas is not immune from cheating either.  He apparently cheated on Hilda while she was hospitalised in Switzerland and he accidently ended up in Austria en-route to her. He met a woman in a bar and we are led to believe they had a romantic liaison for a few weeks. She even called a few times when he was back in SA. Not forgetting his flirtations with Matrone. Oom Oubaas cheated on Hilda again and went to live at Rondomskrik with his new love. 

Shawn emotionally cheated on Lana with Llewellyn, even after Llewellyn died.

Connie cheated on Andre with Diederik of all people. Diedie must’ve been cheated on more than anyone else in 7de Laan.

Willem cheated on Amoray with some random woman.

I’m sure there’s a whole lot more that I’ve missed.  I’ll add them if they come to mind.
