Tonight was Danelle’s memorial service on 7de laan, three days after her death. Ryno and Linda offered to help Bernard get the house ready for the memorial.
He just asked that they keep things simple for Danelle. He told his mom that he’s genuinely glad she is there. That’s one of the many things that’s likeable about Bernard. He is so respectful – isn’t rude or mean which is why he and Danelle were so well suited to each other. His mother didn’t directly or indirectly cause Danelle’s death. Even if Linda had never met Danelle she was highly likely to be working in Oppiekoffie when those criminals burst in.
The food and flowers arrived and everyone helped prepare the food table.
Aggie brought the photo the Hillside Times used in their article on behalf of the office.
Danelle’s friends and colleagues arrived and took their places.
Even Marko came out of hospital in time for the memorial service.
Ryno welcomed everyone on behalf of Danelle’s family and thanked them for attending. He said a few people wanted to say something and Charmaine, Danelle’s former employer stepped up.
Charmaine spoke of when Danelle first arrived in Johannesburg how wide-eyed and unsure she was. At home she was neat and kept her bedroom and the bathroom tidy. A true friend to everyone who knew her. Even during tough times she maintained her friendliness and zest for life.
Charmaine said she would always remember that.
Diederik was next. He spoke of when they were children and spent time on the family farm. Danelle was the only girl and wanted to do everything with the boy cousins. He told of a time they climbed a koppie and Danelle started crying. He carried her even when he was exhausted. He said he would do it again if he could.
Then he told of the time she got lost when she first arrived in Joburg and never pitched for an interview at T&T. She wanted to wanted yo go back to Wolmaranstad. But he was the one who convinced her to stay.
Diederik then read a message from Danelle’s family. They thanked Danelle’s friends in Joburg who they heard much of. Pulane, Kim and Ntabi were like a second family to Danelle and they will never forget that. Good thing they don’t know how cheerful Ntabi has been – like she hardly knew Danelle and how Kim wanted to take one of their daughter’s tops two days after she died.
They’ve never met Bernard but said they knew how happy he made Danelle.
And that was that for Danelle and Andrea Stresso. No flashbacks of when she arrived in 7 de laan or when she went to live at Charmaine’s house or her and Bernard’s first kiss.
