Vinette Ebrahim – Charmaine on 7de laan – Explains her Facebook Post [video]
This morning when I saw this post credited to 7de Laan’s Vinette Ebrahim, I felt sure that a clone account must’ve been created in her name.
Because which actress in her right mind would say something so controversial…publicly?
But when someone mentioned it on Twitter Friday evening, I had to check it out and came across the video below where Vinette Ebrahim explained why she wrote the controversial Facebook post that went viral.
While I agree 100% with Vinette’s sentiments, I’m not so sure that an actress should get herself involved in Facebook wars. It takes away from the conservative, non-political (apparently) character, Charmaine she plays on 7de laan. Or any role she might take in the future.
(I personally can’t imagine ever seeing a movie or listening to a song sung by Steve Hofmeyr, knowing his view of black people.)
And the day a constructive discussion about race is held on Facebook or other social media platforms, is the day I listen to a whole Steve Hofmeyr song – willingly.
I only read a few responses to the original Facebook post and that was enough for me. It’s hard to believe we live in a country where people are that hateful. Fellow 7de laan viewers, no less. Or ex-7de laan viewers as they threatened to become.
Anyway, below is Vinette Ebrahim’s response in her own words. I may not agree with the fact that she responded to someone writing racists posts on Facebook, but I will defend her right to do so any time any day.
I just wish she had found a different platform to air her views. No good has ever come from debating with people with racists views.

Baie teleurgestel in Vinette se rassistiese opmerkings. Nou wys sy haar werklike kleure. Het nog altyd gedink sy is ‘n rolmodel van hoe ‘n Suid-afrikaner moet wees.
Ons sal nooit meer kyk na 7de laan; dit is nou ‘n bitter besigheid.
‘ n rasis is iemand wat velkleur gebruik wanneer na ‘n ander persoon verwys word! Ek is so gatvol vir die alewige agtergeblewenes se gesanik; kom oor dit!
As jy iemand van iets beskuldig staan jy gewoonlik self agter die deur. Haar geteem is deurspek van rassisme en rassehaat. Sies.
Dear Vinette
I really think that you and people who think as you that we white people are oppressors should do some research into who is responsible for what in the past. The TRC report is a good place to start. Never forget that funds were made available for each group to develop themselves, but all the ANC showed interest in was themselves. I was not born when the “forced removals” took place, but I do know that my parents were caring, decent people and would not have approved of anything that would have deliberately oppressed another group. What I do remember was hearing about separate development. Taking into account that funds were made available and that no improvements have been made, in fact things are getting worse, you do need to rethink your remarks and attitude

I think you need to take a visit to the Apartheid museum because you have done what most Afrikaans oppressors do to justify their ignorance, selective choosing of information to retain. Each group……really. Thats your justification, that each group must remain segregated. The ANC didn’t want to be separated from you or Afrikaaner and that’s something i don’t think you appreciate which clearly the world besides you understand. PS how gracious of the invaders and oppressors money givers to dictate to people how they should live on their continent. and i dont want to have to produce a passport to drive 3 hours to Bloemfontein…..
Who is the Afrikaner really? When you can answer the question you have the answer. Who is the coloured? A question that can only be defined by each individual. Who is the black ? Research you ancestry and you will be shocked.
As far as history is concerned South Africa belongs to the coloured people- not white nor black.
Racist or not Vinette you must go you are getting very boring and I feel very sorry for the white actors/actresses that is working with you.
The Country does not belong to anyone, it Only belongs to God The Creator and what do we do, we just Destroy it and God gave us the priveledge to live on this earth..Shame shame
